Sparklers & shutter speeds.

A fun experientation with shutter speeds.

6 seconds ISO100 f4.5
6 seconds ISO100 f4.5
4 seconds IS0100 f4.5
4 seconds IS0 f4.5
4 seconds IS0100 f4.5

3.2 seconds 4.5
6 seconds f4.5
6 seconds ISo100 f4.5
3-4 seconds worked well, more detail. 5 + seconds made subject look too bright.

faster shutter speed worked best.
Went for a walk around Clarence Dock with Nicola. I wanted to try and gain confidence with the DSLR in outdoor settings. Although I had help from Nicola, I still found it quite hard remembering how to add or take certain effects/features away. When I first started out the majority of my pictures came out with a red effect. My first initial thought was that the White Balance was not right. I remember reading about colour temperature and that you can pick up blue and red tints when the temperature is warm/cold. After playing around with White Balance I still found the photos either too dark or too bright. I then went on to changing the aperture.
I have come to realize how unaware of technical aspects of DSLR settings i am and in order to learn completely i have to understand how each setting works as well as how it work

I feel that the image above worked best. The ISO on 800 was too high for this setting causing the photo to appear bright. Shutter speed also should be taken into consideration. I feel that a slower shutter speed worked best with the lighting conditions and added more detail to the images.

Flickr.

came across this Flickr group which i feel would be beneficial to join. http://www.flickr.com/groups/381700@N22/

Its called the 'DSLR beginner club' and includes around 41,000 beginner photos and many dicussion posts. I plan on posting up my photos and hopefully get some feedback aswell as learn from others.

What to focus on this week.

This week I am planning on focusing on a number of things.

1. I would like to finish reading 'The digital SLR handbook' by Michael Freeman and 'Exposure' by Chris Weston
2. Go on more outings with DSLR
3. Think about which area of Digi photog I would eventually consider
4. Gain more experience in Shutter speeds
5. Learn about 'Depth of field'

Images considering all ISO, WB, Aperture and Shutter Speed.

I feel they came out alright and look forward to taking the camera out again.

possibly should have used a smaller apeture? Image too light.

Hyde Park picture house

A series of images experimenting with Aperture once more. I feel it’s important to continue experimenting with these settings first individually, and then considering all settings when taking an image because the more confident I feel with these settings the better the photo will be and the faster the process.

In this case I feel that F11 worked best.

Took a walk around Hyde Park while experimenting with Aperture and F numbers. Overall this outing went well and made me more confident in using the DSLR and understand the lens concept more clearly. I used the cloudy and shade WB settings. I feel the images with the higher F number worked better with the weather that day as it created a silhouette effect. The weather conditions could have been better and it would have been interesting to try and get more detail as the hanging material was visually interesting.

2 weeks

It has been two weeks since I started this project. I have been teaching myself how to use a DSLR and I feel that this brief isn't going well for me. I don't think I have benefited from learning through books for this specific project and have now started to learn through experimentation and trail & error. I have learnt how to use ISO and WB and now feel confident in using these settings. I have started experimenting with shutter speeds in nighttime settings but would like to gain more insight in natural setting with various shutter speeds. I have learnt how the lengths of the shutter effects the light but would like to learn how it affects colour balances. Next week I’d like to do more projects and try and produce satisfying images considering all the new settings I have learnt to use. I am also going to work with studio lighting and receive an induction on using the DSLR's in the studio.

Experimenting with ISO and Aperture.

Took my camera out to experiment. I am still not very confident with these settings. Took pictures with different apertures ranging from F2.8 to F.22. For shooting at this time of day I feel that a large F stop worked best. F.11 worked well, it enabled the image to let in light from lamps and surrounding objects but not appear too dark.
